Key:
— Existing bike/ped crossing
— Proposed bike/ped crossing
No pedestrian or bike crossing
Overview
- Adds signalized median U‑turn between Falk Road/Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast Stapleton Road/Northeast 54th Avenue for crossing or turning left onto SR 500
- Allows left and right turns off SR 500 to Northeast Falk Road/Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast Stapleton Road/Northeast 54th Avenue
- Allows right turns onto SR 500 from Northeast Falk Road/Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast Stapleton Road/Northeast 54th Avenue
- Maintains pedestrian and bicycle crossing at Northeast Falk Road/Northeast 42nd Avenue
- Realigns the pedestrian and bicycle crossing of SR 500 at Northeast Stapleton Road/Northeast 54th Avenue
- Lights in this concept have only two phases increasing green time for allowed movements. By separating movements with the U‑turn intersection, lights for both directions of SR 500 operate independently, increasing efficiency.
What the concept will do
Safety
- Reduces crashes by up to 45 percent
Improved travel times
- Somewhat improves travel times on SR 500
- Reduces SR 500 traffic delays by up to 70 percent
- Reduces long lines of cars
Access to SR 500
- Increases trips on Fourth Plain Boulevard, Northeast St Johns Road and Northeast Andresen Road
- Changes where vehicles cross SR 500 at Northeast Falk Road/Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast Stapleton Road/Northeast 54th Avenue
- Requires traffic signals to coordinate left turns and U‑turns (but reduces overall signal wait times compared to current traffic lights)
Cost Effectiveness
- This concept would cost about $4–6 million
